we’d always hold out for the Scandi in 2001. it was slower and more expensive, but we never felt our lives at risk like with some of the other companies. Even by 2005, though, the buses were in disrepair and a coach broke down on each leg of the journey I booked with Scandi.

I’ve been to the Songea museum and have pictures of Mamertus trying on the local style back packs made of goat skin. It was a dusty little museum, benignly neglected like so much old infrastructure.

I remember several students who were forced to leave school after they got pregnant by classmates or teachers. They would come in baggier sweaters to hide their pregnancy as long as possible, but eventually they would leave and not return again.

I remember teaching a science unit where my textbook recommended that if students wish to protect themselves in the event of a volcanic eruption, their best recourse would be to live far away from any volcano.

The bus even features a digital clock. →
The buses were always Scania and for a few short years, Scandinavia seemed to have a whole fleet of brand news buses that reached even the farthest corners of Tanzania. We would wait at 5:00 in the morning in the cold Songea bus stand for the 12-15 hour trip to Dar es Salaam, but we knew that we would likely arrive more safely and with more comfort than if we had taken any of the cheaper lines,...

One of the greatest difficulties in Tanzanian education arises from teachers who themselves are unable to speak English trying to to impart lessons in English to students who also have little understanding of English. Witness the principal in this article.

Modern transport? →
Two articles on transport in Dar in one day - one promising articulated buses to clean the air and speed passengers along dedicated lanes and the other lamenting that most of the new buses in Dar are ones, which had been formally been consigned to the grave yard, only to be resurrected so the owners could make easy money under a new regulatory regime - the upshot in either case is bad news for the...
Road to Mtwara →
This is a pretty big deal - especially since taxpayers funded it - I went down that way once and slept overnight on a ferry that had been imported from Greece and still bore traces of the decor from when it was built in the 1970’s - lots of coloured glass and shiny baubles.

It’s not the most pleasant place to be stuck during a strike. I remember the first time I left from the place - Peace Corps had wanted us to go to our sites for the first time during a holiday on which the Scandi wouldn’t travel, so they put us on the Air Tawqual, and we lumbered away from the station on a scary and uncomfortable ride. I was never a passgener when a bus killed someone,...

Chamwino Secondary Scales Mount Kilimanjaro
In many ways, it began with our banner—undoubtedly you will it see brandished with pride in many of our photos. I started the students on the project the week we were to depart as something nice to hold at the summit, to show our school pride and also to thank those who made the trip possible (it is hard to see, but there is a light blue “ASANTE SANA” across the top). Since I was missing a week...
